A Message from Alexa

I am a rape survivor, but I also consider myself a survivor of the judicial system.
The effects of rape are long-lasting. But after being victimized by an attacker, one can also feel victimized by the court system. Everyone knows that rape is about control and power. Just as the rapist takes the power away from his victim, the court system does as well.

I spent two excruciating years worried and scared about going to trial. Defense attorneys will try and push back the trial date and use other tactics to intimidate the victim. It’s easy to become discouraged and give up. For this reason many sexual predators are still on the street.

Therefore, it is very important for rape and other sexual assault victims to have family members near them during this painful struggle. Hopefully, our Foundation will allow parents or other trusted loved ones to take time off of work to be there during the lengthy court process.

I know I could have never made it through this most difficult and painful time in my life without my parents there with me. Every person who has been raped should have access to the same support. I'm proud that my parents have started this foundation to help make that possible.
